June 17 - June 20 Scores and Hi-Lites

June 20:
Game 1 - Elmer & Harold Astros relied on 2 five run innings to pull out a close 11 - 9 win against the Cross Town Red Sox. For the Astros, Perry Nurse and Chad Stahl were 3/3 while substitute player Blaine Lutz was 2/2. For the Red Sox, Leroy Freisen was 3/3. Right fielders were busy tonight. Larry Hurrell made 2 great catches and Byron Witkowski also made a great catch on a hard hit ball.

Game 2 - It was a battle of the brew crews for the 2nd game tonight, Juggies TapHouse Brewers vs the Garage Pub FOG, our 1st meeting of the year, our previous scheduled game being rained out. Juggies prevailed in a close one, 10-8. We scored 8 runs in the 1st two innings, then lefty, Jim Dulle, buckled down and held us to 2 runs the rest of the game. He pitched very well. The Garage started out slow, but then slowly got things going, just ran out of gas in the bottom of the 7th. Good game as the clouds and the wind started to set in at the end of the game. Team owner, Kasey Valkenburg, helped out the Brewers cause with a 2 run dinger in the 1st inning. Thanks to the Lakers crew for handling the work duties tonight.

Game 3 - On a blustery day at our beautiful park the Recyclers came out swinging intending on bringing the Meateors back to earth. Alas it was not to be. After crushing the ball into all the gaps on the field Redi posted a five spot in top of the first. Undaunted, the meat boys reeled off 4 consecutive fivers for a 20-5 decision. The Meateors showered hits all over the field with many three for three nights, notable was Royce Hopkins three run dinger which was followed by a Solo triple play by RH to close out the game. Jim “lights out” Fink got the V and Larry Biko took the loss.

Game 2 - The 6:30 game had the Logos Rebels headed to the home of the Redi Recyclers Rockies in Coors Field AK Lorne Holden. Another nail bitter. The Rockies scored 2 in their first, one more in both the second and third innings. The Rebels scored 1 in the second and 5 more in their top half of the third. After 3 complete, the Rebels took the lead 6-4. The Rockies did not lie down as they climbed back up the hill to score 5 of their own in the bottom half of the 5 to take the lead back 9-6 after 5 complete. The Rebels came back with 3 more in their top half of the 6th to tie it up at 9. They added 1 more in the 7th and held onto a 10-9 victory.
For the Rockies Mike Ferre went 3-3, Rick Parker was the same with a home run. Pick-up second baseman Leon Mock made at least 7 outs after that we stop counting. Ken Wou led the Rebels with a double and 3 singles. While winning pitcher Fred Kellen had another solid night at the plate going 3-3. Utility player Roland Schlenker moved around the infield, finding his home at 3rd base. Where in the bottom half of the 4th inning was a human vacuum cleaner. Making all 3 outs. We like to thank the Laker boys for the cooking and umpiring, as well as Stan & Garry in the press box.

Game 3 - On a beautiful evening to play ball at Lorne Holden Field the last game of the evening had the Stewart Optical boys taking on the Cross Town Red Sox. In the end it turned out to be a low scoring affair as all pitchers seemed to have their best stuff working tonight. Even though Johnny Engel and Kevin Lane hit homers for the Stewart Optical team,  it was the Red Sox that came away with the victory 8-4.

Game 3 - The first 2 innings were as cool as the temperature with the Sauer RV Storage Lakers taking a 2 to 1 lead. The Sauer RV Storage Lakers ended up scoring 4 runs in the 3rd inning and 3 runs in the 5th and 6th inning to come away with a 12 to 6 Victory over the E & H Glass Astros.
Highlights for the E & H Glass Astros was a 4 for 4 performance from the owner Keith Lutz which included 1 HR, but the Oilers victory over the Panthers was more important then his 4 for 4 night. Darrell Jesse also went 3 for 3 for the E & H Glass Astros.
Highlights for the Sauer RV Storage Lakers was a 3 for 3 performance by Barry the Beer Batter, Clint Kleckner and Calm and Cool Wilf Broesky.
Plays of the game came from Brian Rover Christmann who made 2 great plays in the rover position to keep 5 runs off the board for the E & H Glass Astros.
Big thanks to the fans who came out in the +10 degree weather to cheer on their team and to eat one of the best Burgers in the city. Also thanks to the announcer, score keeper, umps and cooks who are definitely a big part of of the best slow pitch league in Canada.
