May 5 - 9 Scores and Hi-Lites

May 9:
Game 1 - On a rare Friday night of slowpitch at the Field of Dreams Stewart Optical opened the evening with an 11-4 victory over the boys from the Garage Pub. Six different players all contributed a pair of hits for the eye guys including Bill Rothwell with a triple and Darrell Bonagofsky with a long home run. Byron Witkowski and Bill Rothwell both came up with a couple of great defensive plays for the Optical team that definitely saved a few runs. Rob Price was his usual steady self on the mound not walking any batters, picking up a couple of strikeouts, and keeping the ball in play and the game moving.
For the Pub team Mike Sills, Dieter Stanke, and Russ Cameron all had three hits while Rod Insko and Boyd Hamm each added a couple. If it weren’t for a couple of big defensive plays by the eye guys the score would have been much closer. Rover Russ Cameron was covering ground all over the field and took away what looked like at least three sure hits. Thanks to the Station guys for umping and looking after the concessions, another job well done

Game 2 - A close scoring affair, solid pitching, and airtight defense, some people would have called it a real nail-biter. Even with the humidity and the relentless mosquitoes, both teams somehow kept their focus. Logo Rebels came out on top 5-4 over the Morrison Health Mavericks.
Huge shoutout to Stan, Gary, and the Station Coffee crew for holding things down. Great food and honest umpiring always make the game a fun experience!

Game 3 - On a night when both teams numbers were depleted the Meateors outlasted the Astros 14-9.

May 8:
Game 1An undermanned Mike's Meats Meateors succumbed to the Morrison Mavericks by a score of 11 to 3. Dave Hammel, Blair Bosch and Dale Weisgerger went three for three at the plate.  Threes were prominent for Hammel as he scored three times and knocked in three more. As the starting pitcher he also recorded  three putouts in his only inning pitched.

Game 2 - Juggies TapHouse Brewers had a very close game tonight against the Copper Coulee Silver Foxes, and Juggies hung on for a 15-12 win. We were ahead 15-7 after 5, then the Foxes woke up in the open 6th, got the bats going and scored 5 more, but not quite enough. It was a good game, a little breezy, but a well-played game. Each team had 19 hits, so it could have gone either way. The hits were spread out very evenly on both teams, with numerous players getting 2 hits on each team. The only player with 3 hits was Kasey Valkenburg on Juggies. Good to see Larry Savage back on the mound this year, and also his son has joined him on the team, was playing on their farm team in Taiwan. Welcome to the league. Thanks to Stewart's men for working, Jim & Garry in the press box.

Game 3 - Well slow pitch fans it was a cool and breezy night at the ball park tonight as the Red Sox and the Station Coffee went to battle. When the dust had settled, the Red Sox came away with a 15-9 victory. Good hitting and fielding on both sides with Boyd Hamm leading the way for the Red Sox going 2/3 with a walk including a 2 run homer. Also for the Red Sox Darrel Maser went 2/3, Jack Simons went 2/3, Ken Wow went 3/3 including a triple, for the Station Coffee Blair Hennes went 2/3 including a triple and Perry Nurse went 2/3.  Thanks to the umps and the crew in the concession booth and to the announcers and scorekeeper for their contributions for another outstanding night at the ballpark.

May 7:
Game 1 - The first game of the evening was a back-and-forth affair, with the Logo’s Rebels coming out with a 15-9 win. There were some great hits and plays by both teams.

Game 2 - Tonight’s game shows there is parity in the league as the Elmer & Harold’s Autoglass Astros and the Redi Recycle Rockies played to a 6 - 6 tie. Leading the way for the Rockies, Keith Bender was 3/3 with a triple and Royce Hopkins was also 3/3. Rod Brusky and Barry Koch were 2/3. For the Astros, Keith Lutz was 3/3 with a home run and Darrell Jesse was also 3/3. Kelly Lutz was 2/3.
A nice warm evening and a big thanks to the announcer, scorekeeper, umpires and concession crew.

Game 3 - A beautiful evening for the final game of the night. A back and forth game between Stewart Optical and Bumper to Bumper which came down to the final inning. Stewart Optical scored 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning with help from a 3 run home run from Byron Witkowsky to take a 9 to 8 lead. With their last at bat, Kerry Buss hit a walk off 2 run home run with Kevin Lane on second base to give the Bumper to Bumper Blue Jays a 10 to 9 victory and a “W” for the Blue Jays pitcher Vern Herter.

May 6:
Game 1The Morrison Mavericks scored 12 runs in the last two innings to break up a tight game and defeat the Cross Town Red Sox 18 to 6. John Engel clubbed a grand slam homer in the sixth (and final) inning to lead the Mavs' offensive thrust.
Boyd Hamm bashed out two home runs to provide the bulk of the scoring for the Sox.
Joe Steinbacher on the mound for the Sox battled winning pitcher Dan Hamilton to a 6-6 draw over four well played innings before the roof caved in.

Game 2 - Bumper to Bumper Blue Jays were able to defeat Logos Rebels by a score of 9 to 6.
Leading the way for Bumper to Bumper were Tim Seitz, Lyle Kennedy and Kenn Kallis with 3 hits each. Andy Stroh hit a 3 run home run for the Blue Jays who also turned two double plays in the game. Darryl Bartman, Chris Wandler and Jim Cooper had back to back to back doubles to help Logos with their 5 run third inning. Tom Baker was the winning pitcher in his season opener.

Game 3 - Another great night for ball games at the Lorne Holden Field of Dreams.
The Sauer RV Storage Lakers came away with a 9 to 4 victory over the Redi Recycle Rockies in front of a sold out crowd at the concession booth. The Sauer RV Storage Lakers didn’t allow the Redi Recycle Rockies to recycle any runs until the 5th inning due to some fine defensive by Kevin the wall Sauer at second base and rookie, Mike the road runner Stroh holding down left field.
Highlights for the Sauer RV Storage Lakers began with another fine pitching outing for Wilf the ho hum Broesky for back to back wins. Kevin the Dirt Devil Sauer had more action at second base then a car salesman at year end. Then rookie #3, Mike go go gadget Stroh made the catch of the year (first week of games) by diving forward to catch a line drive in a crucial ending inning for the Redi Recycle Rockies. The only thing between the ball in his glove and the ground was, Luck (great catch). Trever white Shoes Fauth went 3 for 3 at the dish with an in the park home run (speed was not a factor).
The highlights for the Redi Recycle Rockies was a 2 for 2 night for Keith Rawhide Kleckner and a 2 for 3 night for Boom Boom Koch and Keith smoother than Whiskey Bender who both went 2/3.
What a great night for ball. I arrived at the ball park at 5:45PM for my 7:30PM game and I had to park deep into the left field side of the park on the roadside. What a great atmosphere.
Special thanks to the concession staff, the umps, score keeper, announcer, players and the fans who attended the ball games.

May 5:
Game 1 - The first game of the new season at Lorne Holden Field saw the Sauer RV Lakers claim an 8 - 1 victory over the Crosstown Courier Red Sox. The game was secondary to a new start of the MHSSPL getting underway, in a beautiful ball park, with a new score clock, and the smell of burgers from the the wide open doors of the kitchen. The Sauer RV Lakers scored 8 runs in the first three innings to claim the victory. Luckily for the Sauer RV Storage Lakers, the Crosstown Courier Red Sox were hitting within arms reach of the RV Lakers throughout the game.
The highlights for the Sauer RV Storage Lakers came from import Tim, (back from a 3 game mini trip to watch the Toronto Blue Jays go 3 for 3) Johnson who went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's, Kevin Bossman Sauer, Gerard Bergman Hittel and Pierre Chatty Cote all going 2/3 for a total of 5 RBI’s. Wilf Starter & Closer Broesky pitched a fine game with no walks, with this being his first start of the year. The Lakers welcomed Russ the beer guy Foster and Terry Billygoat Satens to their first game in the league. They were both unable to comment after the game due to signing autographs.
The highlights for the Crosstown Courier Red Sox was an in the park Home Run by Derry catch me if you can Eresman, 2 catches into the sun by Darrell Go Tigers Go Maser and some good defense from Bob Go Go Gadget Marfleet. The Red Sox also welcomed Lance energizer Knodel and Jack go get it Brown to the league. They also were unable to comment due to signing autographs.
When the game was over the score didn’t matter (as it never should) because it was more about meeting with your teammates, other players you haven’t seen since the previous seasons, the fans and to just look around as this league continues to make this one of the best leagues and ball parks within our Province, country and beyond.
Special thanks to the kitchen staff for precise cooking, the umpires who never missed a close call, the score keeper who lit up the new score clock, to the announcer who had a clear voice and to true fans who come out to watch some great older talent.

Game 2 - The season opener for both Station Coffee and Mikes Meats saw the Meateors sneak by 9-8. Station jumped out to 4 run lead thanks to seven hits and Richard Bergens first pitch HR. Jim Fink and Ron Pisoni had RBI singles in the bottom half. After a three run 4th for coffee, Mikes put up back to back 3 run innings including Brian Cooneys game winning RBI. Cal Mayer was 3 for 3 for Station while Ron Pisoni had the same for Mikes. Great back and forth game.
